Finding Early Signs of Asbestos Exposure | Mesothelioma News

21 March 2012

Catherine A. Murphy

Asbestos is an extremely hazardous substance, which can demonstrate no signs of exposure for long periods. Most of the time mesothelioma patients will not experience any ill effect for up to 40 years. Because of its long latency period, finding early warning signs of asbestos exposure can be very difficult.

Signs of Asbestos Exposure

There are a number of signs of asbestos exposure; unfortunately none of these symptoms can be considered early signs of any illness related to asbestos exposure. Those who do see signs may not give them proper attention because of their similarity to other common ailments. The symptoms also vary depending on a person?s age, sex, and overall health condition.

Symptoms of Asbestos Exposure

Symptoms of asbestos exposure include:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Dry, crackling sound while breathing
  • Persistent, chronic cough
  • Chest pain
  • Weight loss
  • Difficulty in swallowing
  • Swelling on the face or neck
  • Anemia
  • Nausea
  • Sudden fever
  • Night sweats

Monitoring the Adverse Effects of Asbestos Exposure

Due to the lack of early symptoms, if someone suspects they have been exposed to asbestos they must inform their physician so that early monitoring for adverse effects of asbestos exposure can begin.

Categories of Asbestos Exposure

There are different levels of asbestos exposures, which cause different diseases that grow inside the body. Here is a run down of a few:

  • Lung cancer
  • Asbestosis
  • Mesothelioma cancer
  • Cancer of the throat, gastrointestinal tract, and kidney
  • Pleural plaques
  • Small pleural effusions
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (C.O.P.D.)

Frequently Encountered Asbestos Related Ailments

The most frequently encountered types of asbestos related ailments are asbestosis and mesothelioma cancer; of course, this excludes lung cancer. Of these, mesothelioma cancer is the deadliest.

Prognosis for those with Mesothelioma Symptoms

Mesothelioma is a fatal type of cancer, which occurs in the thin lining of the organs called the Mesothelium. This kind of cancer is usually associated with asbestos exposure in the workplace. Research has shown that those diagnosed with Mesothelioma cancer display certain symptoms.

Unfortunately the prognosis for mesothelioma patients is grim. The fact is that no one has ever recovered from the disease; this may be due to the fact that it takes a long time for mesothelioma symptoms to appear and for the cancer to be diagnosed.
