Leap Motion Controller starts shipping May 13th, hits Best Buy shelves on the 19th

If you were still thinking that the Leap Motion Controller was going to turn into vaporware, it looks like you were wrong. Just less than a year after the company first made waves with its tiny gesture recognizing box, a finished product is getting ready to ship. Those that pre-ordered should receive their shipping notices starting May 13th. If you weren't willing to commit to the device before hand, you'll still be able to snatch one up at Best Buy on May 19th for $80. Or, if you're so inclined, you can continue to use your mouse to play Cut the Rope on your desktop... your choice we suppose.

Obama Considering Gay Marriage Options - Business Insider

The Obama administration has until Thursday to decide whether it will file a "friend of the court" brief in a Supreme Court fight over California's gay marriage ban known as Proposition 8.

The president personally supports gay marriage. However, Justice Department lawyers aren't sure the federal government should go as far as to say there should be a constitutional right to gay marriage across the United States, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday night, citing people familar with the matter.

"[A]dministration lawyers worry that taking such an expansive view in legal briefs could unnerve some justices in the Supreme Court's conservative wing, the people familiar with the matter said," the Journal reported.

The Obama administration isn't actually a part of the Proposition 8 case, but any arguments it makes in a brief to the court could be persuasive to the justices.

The Justice Department already filed an amicus brief in a seperate Supreme Court fight to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act. That Clinton-era law defines marriage as between a man and a woman for federal law purposes.

In DOMA, the crux of the Obama administration's argument is that the federal government should recognize same-sex marriages performed in states where they're legal.

Obama has the chance to make a much more sweeping argument for a nationwide constitutional right to gay marriage in Prop 8.

10 Colleges Where the Most Students Study Abroad

The U.S. News Short List, separate from our overall rankings, is a regular series that magnifies individual data points in hopes of providing students and parents a way to find which undergraduate or graduate programs excel or have room to grow in specific areas. Be sure to explore The Short List: College and The Short List: Grad School to find data that matters to you in your college or grad school search.

Students who study abroad often cite it as one of the highlights of their college experience, and it is easy to see why. Studying at a foreign university allows undergrads to stretch their wings, explore new cultures, and forge friendships with students and host families, all while earning college credit.

[See the 2013 Best Colleges Rankings.]

Goucher College in Maryland and Soka University of America in California hold the experience in such high regard that they require every student to spend time abroad before they graduate. The two universities top the list of schools with the most students studying abroad.

At the 10 schools with the highest participation rates, an average of 83 percent of 2011 graduates studied overseas. But those schools are in the minority.

[Learn what to ask about study abroad programs.]

On average, about 23 percent of 2011 college graduates studied abroad at some point, based on data reported by 339 ranked schools in an annual survey by U.S. News. The participation rate was less than 1 percent at a handful of those schools.

One reason many students choose not to study abroad is the cost, which includes much more than tuition and books. Students and their parents often end up footing the bill for airfare, housing, food, and in-country transportation. The schools with the highest study abroad participation typically offer stipends and scholarships to help make the experience financially possible.

[Read these savings tips for parents of study abroad students.]

Below are the schools with the highest percentage of 2011 graduating seniors who participated in a study abroad program. Unranked colleges, which do not submit enough data for U.S. News to calculate a ranking, were not considered for this report.

Don't see your school in the top 10? Access the U.S. News College Compass to find special study options, complete rankings, and much more.

U.S. News surveyed more than 1,800 colleges and universities for our 2012 survey of undergraduate programs. Schools self-reported a myriad of data regarding their academic programs and the makeup of their student body, among other areas, making U.S. News's data the most accurate and detailed collection of college facts and figures of its kind. While U.S. News uses much of this survey data to rank schools for our annual Best Colleges rankings, the data can also be useful when examined on a smaller scale. U.S. News will now produce lists of data, separate from the overall rankings, meant to provide students and parents a means to find which schools excel, or have room to grow, in specific areas that are important to them. While the data come from the schools themselves, these lists are not related to, and have no influence over, U.S. News's rankings of Best Colleges or Best Graduate Schools. The study abroad data above are correct as of Feb. 26, 2013.

Hot air balloon crash in Egypt kills 19 foreigners

LUXOR, Egypt (AP) ? An Egyptian security official says at least 19 foreign tourists were killed as their hot air balloon crashed near the famed ancient city of Luxor. The casualties included French, British and other nationals.

The official says there was a fire and an explosion and that the balloon then plunged from the sky and crashed into sugar cane fields west of Luxor on Tuesday. Luxor is 510 kilometers (320 miles) south of Cairo.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to talk to the media.

An Associated Press reporter at the crash site says he counted eight bodies as they were put into body bags and taken away.

Te'o finally gets chance to focus on football

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? Manti Te'o's first appearance on a football field since the BCS championship game didn't go as well as planned Monday.

The Notre Dame star and Heisman Trophy runner-up was clocked at 4.82 seconds in the 40-yard dash. NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock had said Sunday anything faster than 4.7 would be "phenomenal." Anything 4.8 or over would be a "concern."

The workout came more than a month after Te'o's highly-publicized online romance with a girlfriend was exposed as a hoax and that he was a victim of the hoax.

Since then, he's done a handful of 1-on-1 interviews and took questions Saturday in one of the craziest scenes in NFL scouting combine history. Reporters crowded around the podium, lining up eight deep to hear Te'o talk one more time about what happened.

Some have wondered if the embarrassing story was a distraction leading into the national championship game, in which Te'o and his Notre Dame teammates played poorly in a blowout loss to Alabama.

The linebacker said Saturday the hoax had no impact on that game. And he insists it has not affected his preparation for the combine, either.

But instead of putting those concerns to rest with a good showing Monday, Te'o fell short of his goals again ? and not just in the 40.

Te'o participated in five of the seven drills, opting out of the bench press and 60-yard shuttle, and did not finish ranked among the top five at his position in any of them.

His vertical jump was 33 inches, far below Southern Mississippi's Jamie Collins' positional best of 41?. Te'o jumped 113 inches in the broad jump. He finished the three-cone drill in 7.13 seconds, well off the pace set by Missouri's Zaviar Gooden (6.71). Te'o completed the 20-yard shuttle in 4.27 seconds, again behind Gooden's 4.18.

After the workouts, which were closed to the media, Te'o told NFL Network that he could have done better ? and that he will at next month's Pro Day at Notre Dame.

Scouts also have been curious to see how former LSU cornerback Tyrann Mathieu would perform in Indy after getting kicked off his college team last summer and took the entire season off.

Mathieu didn't do well Monday, either. He did only four reps on the 225-pound bench press, tied with Appalachian State's Demetrius McCray for the lowest among all defensive backs.

The defensive backs will complete their workouts Tuesday, the final day of the combine.

Powers to offer sanctions relief if Iran curbs nuclear program

ALMATY (Reuters) - Major powers will offer Iran some sanctions relief during talks in Almaty, Kazakhstan, this week if Tehran agrees to curb its nuclear program, a U.S. official said on Monday.

But the Islamic Republic could face more economic pain if it fails to address international concerns about its atomic activities, the official said ahead of the February 26-27 meeting in the central Asian state, speaking on condition of anonymity.

"There will be continued sanctions enforcement ... there are other areas where pressure can be put," the official said, on the eve of the first round of negotiations between Iran and six world powers in eight months.

A spokesman for European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, who leads the talks with Iran on behalf of the powers, said Tehran should understand that there was an "urgent need to make concrete and tangible progress" in Kazakhstan.

Both Russia and the United States stressed there was not an unlimited amount of time to resolve a dispute that has raised fears of a new war in the Middle East.

"The window for a diplomatic solution simply cannot by definition remain open forever. But it is open today. It is open now," U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said in London.

"There is still time but there is only time if Iran makes the decision to come to the table and negotiate in good faith," he added in a news conference in London. "We are prepared to negotiate in good faith, in mutual respect, in an effort to avoid whatever terrible consequences could follow failure."

It was not clear what he meant by "terrible consequences." Top U.S. officials have repeatedly said the United States will not take any options off the table, code for the possibility of a military strike. They also fear Iran's getting a nuclear weapon could set off an arms race across the Middle East.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said there was "no more time to waste", Interfax news agency quoted him as saying in Almaty.

The immediate priority for the powers - the United States, Russia, China, Germany, Britain and France - is to convince Iran to halt its higher-grade enrichment, which is a relatively short technical step away from potential atom bomb material.

Iran, which has taken steps over the last year to expand its uranium enrichment activities in defiance of international demands to scale it back, wants a relaxation of increasingly harsh sanctions hurting its lifeline oil exports.

Western officials say the Almaty meeting is unlikely to produce any major breakthrough, in part because Iran's presidential election in June may make it difficult for it to make significant concessions before then for domestic reasons.

But they say they hope that Iran will take their proposals seriously and engage in negotiations to try to find a diplomatic settlement.

"No one is expecting to walk out of here with a deal but ... confidence building measures are important," one senior Western official said.

The stakes are high: Israel, assumed to be the Middle East's only nuclear-armed arsenal, has strongly hinted at possible military action to prevent its old foe from obtaining such arms. Iran has threatened to retaliate if attacked.

GOLD SANCTIONS RELIEF?

The U.S. official said the powers' updated offer to Iran - a modified version of one rejected by Iran in the unsuccessful talks last year - would take into account its recent nuclear advances, but also take "some steps in the sanctions arena".

This would be aimed at addressing some of Iran's concerns, the official said, while making clear it would not meet Tehran's demand of an easing of all punitive steps against it.

"We think ... there will be some additional sanctions relief" in the powers' revised proposal," the official said, without giving details.

Western diplomats have told Reuters the six countries will offer to ease sanctions on trade in gold and precious metals if Iran closes its Fordow underground uranium enrichment plant.

Iran has indicated, however, that this will not be enough.

Tehran denies Western allegations it is seeking to develop the capability to make nuclear bombs, saying its program is entirely peaceful. It wants the powers to recognize what it sees as its right to refine uranium for peaceful purposes.

The U.S. official said the powers hoped that the Almaty meeting would lead to follow-up talks soon.

"We are ready to step up the pace of our meetings and our discussions," the official said, adding the United States would also be prepared to hold bilateral talks with Tehran if it was serious about it.

Ashton's spokesman, Michael Mann, said the updated offer to Iran was "balanced and a fair basis" for constructive talks.

Ditch The Spreadsheet. YC-Backed Meldium Controls Your Team?s Shared App Passwords For You

meldiumlogoIf you've been part of a small- or medium-sized business or organization recently, you've dealt with "the spreadsheet." It's that document that's tacked up on the wall (or shared via email) where all the group's important login names and passwords are kept. It's a mess to maintain in itself, of course, but the real problems come when people leave the team.

Kantar: Android back on top of US smartphone share in January with Sprint's help

Kantar Android back on top of US smartphone market share with Sprint's help

Most US smartphone market share estimates last fall saw Apple retake the lead as it rode a wave of iPhone 5 sales. While there was always a question as to how long that trend would last, new data from Kantar Worldpanel supports beliefs that it was really more of a momentary pop. Android reportedly took back the lead at 49.4 percent of American sales between November and January, improving its overall position versus the same month last year. Not that everyone else was necessarily hurting -- iOS still had a 45.9 percent slice of the pie, and the continued Windows Phone 8 rollout took Microsoft up to 3.2 percent. The real wounds were dealt to a pre-transition BlackBerry and Nokia's outgoing Symbian.

We seldom get an explanation as to why such shifts take place, but the researchers suggest that a significant chunk of the January switch-up can be assigned to one carrier: Sprint. Its decision to cut the Galaxy S III's contract price to $99 supposedly helped Samsung's flagship climb from 14 percent of Sprint sales in October to 39 percent over the more recent 3-month span. The Galaxy S III didn't play as much of a role elsewhere, Kantar says. Sprint's average contract pricing for Android also dipped to $95 at the same time, helping Samsung alone get 60.3 percent of the network's business as customers snapped up bargains. Big Yellow only played a small part in the overall US market, as you'll see in the detailed charts after the break, but it may have been large enough to tip the balance in OS preferences at the start of 2013.

General Dynamics locks down Android, demos ultra-secure LG Optimus 3D Max

GD Protected suite locks down Android, demos ultrasecure LG Optimus 3D Max

General Dynamics doesn't exactly make the sexiest gear in the world. But, it sure has this secure gadget thing on lockdown. The NSA contractor is moving to ensure that Android is as snoop proof as can be with its new GD Protected software. The heart of the system is a sandboxed virtual instance of Android that delivers the sort of security features demanded by governments and the military (and some particularly paranoid businesses). That isolated OS runs alongside a standard Android install that you can use for personal purposes, while keeping your sensitive data on the secure side -- not unlike BlackBerry Balance. There's two layers of encryption separating the virtual install from the standard one, along with hardware security provided by Fixmo. The company has worked with LG, the DoD and the USMC to build a customized version of the Optimus 3D Max to showcase how the software works. The device even has a dedicated button that lets you quickly and seamlessly switch between the personal and secure personas, indicated by green and red borders, respectively. If you're not really keen on equipping your foot soldiers with last year's mediocre LG handset (and have no need for super secure stereoscopic snapshots) then you'll probably be happy to hear that General Dynamics will be bringing GD Protected to the Galaxy S III as well. The platform has been integrated into Samsung's own security solution, dubbed KNOX, and will be available sometime in Q2 of this year. For a few more details, check out the video demo and PR after the break.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A senator just back from Cuba says it will require "give and take on both sides" and "quiet negotiation" to secure the release of an American man imprisoned in Cuba.

Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont says that Alan Gross isn't going to be released by the Cuban government because of pressure from the United States.

Leahy tells CNN's "State of the Union" that it's time to re-examine the overall U.S.-Cuban relationship and move on from the "Cold War mentality" of the 1960s and 1970s.

Leahy met last week with Gross and raised his case during a meeting that a congressional delegation had with Cuban President Raul Castro.

Gross, who's from Maryland, is serving a 15-year-sentence for bringing communications equipment to the island illegally while on a USAID-funded democracy-building program.

George Clooney, Stacy Keibler Oscars 2013: Now That's A Good-Looking Couple (PHOTO)

George Clooney and Stacy Keibler made their second Oscars appearance together tonight -- except this time Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie weren't there to join them.

The pair, who have been dating since July 2011, were lovely as they walked the red carpet at the 2013 Academy Awards. Clooney, who produced Best Picture nominee "Argo" alongside director Ben Affleck, was all smiles as he escorted his 33-year-old girlfriend into the theater.

The 51-year-old actor looked dapper in a tuxedo, while Keibler wowed in a studded, sequiny grey gown.

And although Clooney has been honest about his opinion on marriage, it appears he's head over heels for Keibler. (As he should be).

Check out the couple on the Oscars red carpet below:

Acer's low-end Iconia B1-A71 Android tablet made its debut at CES 2013, packing a dual-core 1.2GHz Mediatek processor and 8GB of internal storage. A few months later here at MWC, the company is introducing a 16GB model of the 7-inch Jelly Bean slate, and it's on sale immediately for €139 (compared to €119 for the 8GB version). The higher storage capacity is the real story here; otherwise, you're looking at the same 1,024 x 600 display, 0.3-megapixel camera and lightweight plastic build. Like the version announced at CES, the B1 is available in Africa, Europe and the Middle East but not North America. Cruise past the break for the press release.

Microsoft hit by similar hack to Apple, Facebook

By Reuters

Posted on 23 Feb 2013 at 11:43

Microsoft admitted a small number of its computers, including some in its Mac software business unit, were infected with malware.

It said there no evidence of customer data being affected and it is continuing its investigation.

Microsoft said the security intrusion was "similar" to recent ones reported by Apple and Facebook.

The incident, reported on one of the company's public blogs happened "recently", but Microsoft said it chose not to make any statement publicly while it gathered information about the attack.

"During our investigation, we found a small number of computers, including some in our Mac business unit, that were infected by malicious software using techniques similar to those documented by other organizations," said Matt Thomlinson, general manager of Trustworthy Computing Security at Microsoft, in the company's blog post. "We have no evidence of customer data being affected and our investigation is ongoing."

"This type of cyber-attack is no surprise to Microsoft and other companies that must grapple with determined and persistent adversaries," he added.

Over the past week or so, both Apple and Facebook said computers used by employees were attacked after visiting a software developer website infected with malicious software.

HYDERABAD, India (AP) ? Indian police are investigating whether a shadowy Islamic militant group was responsible for a dual bomb attack that killed 16 people outside a movie theater and a bus station in the southern city of Hyderabad, a police official said Friday.

The group, the Indian Mujahideen, is thought to have links with militants in neighboring Pakistan. India's recent execution of an Islamic militant is being examined as a possible motive for the bombings, said the official, an investigator who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to reveal details of the probe.

Police have not detained anyone in connection with Thursday evening's attacks, the first major terror bombings in India since 2011.

According to a New Delhi police report, two suspected Indian Mujahideen militants who were arrested last year said during questioning that they had done reconnaissance of Dilsukh Nagar, the Hyderabad district where the blasts occurred. They had also visited various spots in New Delhi, Mumbai and Pune.

In a statement in India's Parliament, Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said that in response to the "cowardly terror attack," the government will "make all efforts to apprehend the perpetrators and masterminds behind the blast and ensure that they are punished as per the law."

Earlier Friday, as he toured the site of the bombings, Shinde said there had been a general alert about the possibility of an attack somewhere in India for the past three days. "But there was no specific intelligence about a particular place," he said.

The bombs were attached to two bicycles about 150 meters (500 feet) apart in Hyderabad's Dilsukh Nagar district, Shinde said. He said in addition to the 16 dead, 117 others were injured.

The bombs exploded minutes apart in a crowded shopping area. The blasts shattered storefronts, scattered food and plates from roadside restaurants and left tangles of dead bodies. Passersby rushed the wounded to hospitals.

Top state police officer V. Dinesh Reddy said improvised explosive devices with nitrogen compound were used in the blasts, which he blamed on a "terrorist network."

Pakistan strongly condemned the blasts.

"Terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security. All acts of terrorism are unjustifiable regardless of their motivation," the Pakistan Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

On Friday morning, Indian police with cameras, gloves and plastic evidence bags used pointers to gingerly look through the debris in Hyderabad. Officials from the National Investigation Agency and commandos of the National Security Guards arrived from New Delhi to help with the investigation.

India has been under a heightened state of alert for nearly two weeks since Kashmiri militant Mohammed Afzal Guru was hanged for his involvement in a 2001 attack on India's Parliament that killed 14 people, including five of the gunmen.

Since the execution, near-daily protests have rocked Indian-ruled Kashmir, where many people believe Guru did not receive a fair trial. Anger in a region where anti-India sentiment runs deep was further fueled by the secrecy with which the execution was carried out.

Hyderabad, a city of 10 million in the state of Andhra Pradesh, is a hub of India's information technology industry and has a mixed population of Muslims and Hindus.

"This (attack) is to disturb the peaceful living of all communities in Andhra Pradesh," said Kiran Kumar Reddy, the state's chief minister.

The explosions were the first major terror attack since a September 2011 blast outside the High Court in New Delhi killed 13 people. The government has been heavily criticized for its failure to arrest the masterminds behind previous bombings.

Thursday's attack occurred in the same Hindu-dominated area where a blast outside a Hindu temple killed two people in 2000. In 2007, a twin bombing killed 40 people in two other Hyderabad districts.

The United States, whose secretary of state, John Kerry, met Thursday in Washington with Indian Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai, condemned the attack.

"The United States stands with India in combating the scourge of terrorism and we are also prepared to offer any and all assistance Indian authorities may need," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said at a news briefing.

Rana Banerji, a former security official, said India remains vulnerable to such attacks because there is poor coordination between the national government and the states. Police reforms are moving very slowly and the quality of intelligence gathering is poor, he said.

"The concept of homeland security should be made effective, on a war footing," he said.

Chesapeake to complete search for McClendon replacement by April

DEAR ABBY: My boyfriend, "Doug" (24), and I (22) have been in a long-distance relationship for a year, but we were friends for a couple of years before that. I had never had a serious relationship before and lacked experience. Doug has not only been in two other long-term relationships, but has had sex with more than 15 women. One of them is an amateur porn actress.I knew about this, but it didn't bother me until recently. Doug had a party, and while he was drunk he told one of his buddies -- in front of me -- that he should watch a certain porn film starring his ex-girlfriend. ...

Fish oil component reduces brain damage in newborns, mouse study suggests

Feb. 20, 2013 ? Research conducted by a team of scientists from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and Dr. Nicolas Bazan, Boyd Professor and Director of the Neuroscience Center of Excellence at LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans, found the novel use of a component of fish oil reduced brain trauma in newborn mice. The study reports that neonatal brain damage decreased by about 50% when a triglyceride lipid emulsion containing docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) was injected within two hours of the onset of ischemic stroke.

The study compared the effectiveness of emulsions with two omega-3 fatty acids -- DHA and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) -- as well as optimal doses and therapeutic window. The researchers found that DHA provided protection while EPA did not. The therapeutic window ranged from 90 minutes prior to several hours after with the optimal window for treatment 0 -- 2 hours. There was no protective effect at hour 4.

DHA is an essential omega-3-fatty acid and is vital for proper brain function. It is also necessary for the development of the nervous system, including vision. Moreover, omega-3 fatty acids, found in cold water fatty fish, including salmon, tuna, mackerel, sardines, shellfish, and herring, are part of a healthy diet that helps lower the risk of heart disease. DHA has potent anti-inflammatory effects. Since inflammation is at the root of many chronic diseases, DHA treatment has been widely demonstrated to have beneficial effects in patients with coronary heart disease, asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, sepsis, cancer, dry eye disease, and age-related macular degeneration. Its potential benefit in stroke is now being documented.

EPA is also an omega-3 fatty acid found in coldwater fish. EPA can prevent the blood from clotting easily. Often paired with DHA in fish oil supplements, these fatty acids are known to reduce pain and swelling.

Ischemic strokes, representing about 87% of strokes, result from loss of blood flow to an area of the brain due to a blockage such as a clot or atherosclerosis. The damage includes an irreversibly injured core of tissue at the site of the blockage. The area of tissue surrounding the core, called the penumbra, is also damaged but potentially salvageable. The penumbra has a limited life span and appears to undergo irreversible damage within a few hours unless blood flow is reestablished and neuroprotective therapy is administered. A cascade of chemicals floods the tissue along with restored blood flow, including damaging free radicals and pro-inflammatory enzymes which can cause further damage and cell death.

Administering clot-busting drugs (thrombolysis) is currently the only treatment for ischemic stroke. But due to a narrow therapeutic window and complexity of administration, only 3-5% of patients typically benefit from thrombolysis.

Dr. Bazan's group at the LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans Neuroscience Center of Excellence has increasingly shown that DHA is a potentially powerful treatment for stroke for nearly ten years. His study published in 2011 found DHA triggered production of Neuroprotectin D1 (NPD1), a naturally occurring neuroprotective molecule in the brain derived from DHA and discovered by Dr. Bazan. Not only did DHA treatment salvage stroke-damaged brain tissue that would have died, its repair mechanisms rendered some areas indistinguishable from normal tissue by 7 days.

"Stroke is a brain attack that each year kills 130,000 Americans," notes Dr. Bazan. "Strokes can occur at any age, including in newborns, with long-term and devastating consequences. DHA is already widely consumed as a dietary supplement in the US, and from a therapeutic point of view, we can now see a light at the end of the tunnel."

The researchers conclude that the findings suggest a need for further studies to determine if acute injection of these emulsions could be neuroprotective after stroke injury in humans. They also suggest that the emulsion rich in DHA will prove to be a novel and important therapy to treat stroke and could decrease mortality and increase long-term functional recovery after stroke in humans of different ages. The paper's senior author is Richard Deckelbaum, MD, director of the Institute of Human Nutrition at Columbia's College of Physicians & Surgeons.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 795,000 Americans have a stroke each year, and stroke causes 1 in every 18 deaths. Stroke is also a leading cause of long-term disability. Louisiana is among the states with the highest prevalence of stroke. It has been estimated that the direct and indirect costs of stroke in the United States totaled nearly $74 billion in 2010. In addition, with an estimated incidence of 1 in 2300 to 5000 births, stroke is more likely to occur in the perinatal period than at other times in childhood. Ischemic stroke in newborns is a disorder associated with significant long-term neurologic impairment. Twenty to 60% of survivors exhibit long-term detrimental neuropsychological consequences which include mental retardation, cerebral palsy, and behavioral disorders.

Newt transcriptome offers insight into tissue regeneration

Wednesday, February 20, 2013

Scientists have identified protein families expressed during tissue regeneration in newts, providing the groundwork for research into whether particular sets of genes are used for the purpose. The transcriptome ? the map of all RNA molecules ? of the newt is published this week in BioMed Central's open access journal Genome Biology. Notophthalmus viridescens is a useful model in regenerative medicine, thanks to its ability to regenerate tissue, and this data gives insights into the mechanisms behind this process.

N. viridescens, the common newt, is native to North America, and an urodelian amphibian. Newt and salamander genomes are enormous; currently too big to sequence, but their potential to regenerate entire limbs, along with parts of the central nervous system, has fascinated scientists for over 200 years. Thomas Braun, Thilo Borchardt at the Max Planck Institutes, Patagonis Tsonis at the University of Dayton and their colleagues sequenced a collection of healthy and regenerated tissues from newts, and converged them into one comprehensive transcriptome. Their analysis identified 826 proteins specific for urodeles, and several newly identified proteins that they believe may play important roles in regeneration process unique for urodeles. Their data also outline genes that appear only in regenerating, but not uninjured material, which will be of interest in regenerative medicine.

The transcriptome is not complete, but serves as a matrix for further analyses. The authors believe that their findings represent only the tip of the iceberg: 'Our data provide the groundwork for mechanistic experiments to answer the question whether urodeles utilize proprietary sets of genes for tissue regeneration.' They continue: 'The newly established de novo transcriptome [...] will be an indispensable resource for a better understanding of regenerative events in newts and facilitate the identifications of molecules [...] that control this fascinating process.'

3-D Printed Octopus Suckers Help Robots Stick

octopus robot suckers

Legions of animal-inspired robots are being created to improve military missions and disaster response efforts?from crawling cockroach-like RHex bots to leaping Sand Flea robots and the speeding Cheetah machines. Now, a squishier source for smart robo-tech has joined the ranks: octopuses.

Teams of researchers are already developing soft-bodied, octopus-esque robots for search and rescue. These endeavors include the European Union-funded OCTOPUS Integrating Project based in Livorno, Italy (home of the famous disembodied grasping robot octopus arm) and Harvard?s four-legged, compressed-air driven bot.

But a new effort is underway to borrow just a part of the octopus?s anatomy: its suckers.

Octopuses have dozens to hundreds of flexible suckers on each of their arms. These handy cups can generate substantial amounts of force for grabbing tasty crabs or hanging onto the rocky walls of a den.

Robotics researchers have been trying to mimic this ability for decades. Early robotic suckers used a central air pump connected to multiple suction cups. This technique, however, presented a problem if not all of the suckers were fully attached to the desired object: unattached suckers would mean lost air and suction ability for the whole device.

But a real octopus?s sucker can activate individually when they come into contact with an object?adhering to or releasing it independently of suckers elsewhere on the arm.

So a collaboration of researchers at the U.S. Army Research Laboratory, the Edgewood Chemical Biological Center and the University of Maryland are taking a lesson from the animals and are creating individually activated robotic suckers. These suckers, made on multi-material 3-D printers, could adorn more traditional robots to give them an extra tool for more complex handling capabilities.

?Manipulation of unknown objects is a very difficult task for a robot,? said Chad Kessens, a graduate robotic manipulation researcher at the Army Research Laboratory and lead developer of the robot-ready suction cups, in a prepared statement.

Often, robots are programed (or learn) to pick up or work with a specific type of object. But this sort of programming or training is often impossible in a disaster situation. ?When something like Fukushima happens, it would be very useful if the robots that are sent in could perform some sort of manipulation activity like closing a valve, recovering an object or operating a tool in a contaminated area,? Kessens noted. But traditional robots often have rigid digits that do not grasp well on other hard surfaces.

Actual octopus suckers are strong but are also super-sensitive to touch and under a high degree of muscular control. This allows them to hold onto an object they cannot see.

Rather than attempt to replicate the octopus?s very keen sense and control, the researchers designed a self-sealing sucker. Still activated by a central vacuum, these suckers are outfitted with individual movable plugs. The plug automatically seals the suction cup closed if it is not touching anything, and it opens when the suction cup comes into contact with an object, allowing pump-driven suction to start. By focusing the suction action on only those cups that are in direct contact with the desired object, this approach also increases the pressure each of those active cups receives.

To get just the right combination of strength and precision, the researchers have been building their prototypes with the help of a multi-material 3-D printer. ?With 3-D printing, you?re getting a working ensemble of suction cups right off of the machine? in a matter of minutes, said Brad Ruprecht, a collaborator at the Edgewood Chemical Biological Center?s Advanced Design and Manufacturing Division, in a prepared statement. He helped develop a combination of sturdy nylon and a liquid photo polymer that hardens when blasted with ultraviolet light.

Kessens and his colleagues have demonstrated that the suckers work quite well on land?and even at home; just four of the smallest suction cups?each about the size of a fingertip?can hold a full bottle of wine. But the researchers are hopeful that the suckers, like those of the octopus?s, will work even better underwater. ?When you?re operating in the atmosphere using air, you?re limited to the atmospheric pressure for how much force you can generate from the suction cup,? Kessens said. ?But when you go underwater, you have all of the extra pressure from the depths of the sea, so that gives you more force to utilize for the effectiveness of the cups.?

Once the team takes these strong suckers into the deep, however, they will likely need to reassess the materials. ?You probably wouldn?t use the same materials,? Ruprecht said. ?You?d want something that is going to hold up to salt water, like a thermal plastic,? which would be more cost-effective to create with traditional injection molds if these robotic octopus suckers ever take off in large quantities, he noted.

In the meantime, the researchers are continuing to test out different printed prototypes to find out which ones truly suck.
