Netflix Class Action Lawsuit over Privacy Settled ... - The Internet Patrol

A settlement over the class action lawsuit against Netflix for privacy issues, which included retaining personally identifiable data with respect to customer video renting and viewing habits, has been reached, and if you are a current or former Netflix subscriber, you may have received an email notice of the class action settlement. The email, sent from ?Online DVD Class Action Administrator? has a subject of ?Video Privacy Lawsuit ? Current and Former Netflix Subscribers?, and goes on to tell you what your rights are with respect to the settlement, which settlement includes Netflix ?decoupling? your video rental and viewing data from your personal information. It also advises you that you have to opt out of the settlement in order to retain any rights you may have to sue Netflix directly over the privacy violation.

It all stems from Netflix? practice of retaining both credit card and video renting and viewing habits of their customers, even a year or more after the customer has cancelled their service. While retaining aggregate rental and viewing data - not connected to a specific customer - is in keeping with current Internet business practices, it?s not cool to keep it coupled with personally identifying information of former customers. That is why part of the settlement involves Netflix ?decoupling? the data.

And, it?s never cool to keep your customers? credit card information once they are no longer your customers.

Of course, all that said, there is nothing in it for the average Netflix user (i.e., most members of the ?class? in the class action - including you, unless you are a ?named plaintiff?). What you get is the comfort of knowing that Netflix is no longer allowed to associate your viewing and rental data with you - at least, once you are no longer a Netflix customer.

If You Are a Current or Former Netflix Subscriber
A Class Action Settlement Could Affect You

Para una notificaci?n en Espa?ol, llamar 1-866-898-5088 o visitar www.VideoPrivacyClass.com

Our records show that you were a current or former Netflix subscriber as of July 5, 2012. We are emailing to tell you about a Settlement that may affect your legal rights. Please read this email carefully. Go to www.VideoPrivacyClass.com for more information.

A Settlement has been reached in a class action lawsuit that claims Netflix unlawfully kept and disclosed information, including records on the movies and TV shows its customers viewed. Netflix denies that it has done anything wrong.

What does the Settlement provide?

Netflix has agreed to change its data retention practices so that it separates (known as ?decoupling?) Entertainment Content Viewing History (that is, movies and TV shows that someone watched) from identification information for those subscribers who have not been a Netflix subscriber for at least 365 days, with some exceptions.

In addition, Netflix will pay $9 million into a Settlement Fund to:
? Make donations to Court-approved not-for-profit organizations, institutions, or programs.
? Pay notice and settlement administration expenses.
? Pay attorneys? fees of up to 25% or $2.25 million of the Settlement Fund, plus up to $25,000 in expenses.
? Pay a total incentive award of $30,000 to the Named Plaintiffs.

Proposals from potential donation recipients will be sought, and, after consideration, recommendations will be made to the Court. A list of the proposed donation recipients will be posted on the website.

Your Options

If you do nothing, you will remain in the Settlement and your rights will be affected. If you do not want to be included, you must exclude yourself by November 14, 2012. If you exclude yourself you will keep your right to sue Netflix about the claims in this lawsuit. If you remain in the Settlement, you can object to it by November 14, 2012.

The Court will hold a hearing on December 5, 2012 to consider any objections, whether to approve the Settlement, award attorneys? fees, and incentive award. You can appear at the hearing, but you don?t have to. You can hire your own attorney, at your own expense, to appear or speak for you at the hearing.

UM researchers assess the efficacy and feasibility of a program designed to help children and parents learn about emotions and develop strategies for a happier life

CORAL GABLES, FL (July 11, 2012)Emotional problems in childhood are common. Approximately 8 to 22 percent of children suffer from anxiety, often combined with other conditions such as depression. However, most existing therapies are not designed to treat co-existing psychological problems and are therefore not very successful in helping children with complex emotional issues.

To develop a more effective treatment for co-occurring youth anxiety and depression, University of Miami (UM) psychologist Jill Ehrenreich-May and her collaborator Emily L. Bilek analyzed the efficacy and feasibility of a novel intervention created by the researchers, called Emotion Detectives Treatment Protocol (EDTP). Preliminary findings show a significant reduction in the severity of anxiety and depression after treatment, as reported by the children and their parents.

"We are very excited about the potential of EDTP," says Ehrenreich-May, associate professor of psychology in the College of Arts and Sciences at UM and principal investigator of the study. "Not only could the protocol better address the needs of youth with commonly co-occurring disorders and symptoms, it may also provide additional benefits to mental health professionals," she says. "EDTP offers a more unified approach to treatment which, we hope, will allow for an efficient and cost-effective treatment option for clinicians and clients alike."

Emotion Detectives Treatment Program is an adaptation of two treatment protocols developed for adults and adolescents, the Unified Protocols. The program implements age-appropriate techniques that deliver education about emotions and how to manage them, strategies for evaluating situations, problem solving skills, behavior activation (a technique to reduce depression) and parent training.

In the study, 22 children ages 7 to 12 with a principal diagnosis of an anxiety disorder and secondary issues of depression participated in a 15-session weekly group therapy of EDTP. Among participants who completed the protocol (18 out of 22), 14 no longer met criteria for an anxiety disorder at post-treatment. Additionally, among participants who were assigned a depressive disorder before treatment, (5 out of 22), only one participant continued to meet such criteria at post-treatment.

Unlike results from previous studies, the presence of depressive symptoms did not predict poorer treatment response. The results also show a high percentage of attendance. The findings imply that EDTP may offer a better treatment option for children experiencing anxiety and depression.

"Previous research has shown that depressive symptoms tend to weaken treatment response for anxiety disorders. We were hopeful that a broader, more generalized approach would better address this common co-occurrence," says Bilek, doctoral candidate in clinical psychology, at UM and co-author of the study. "We were not surprised to find that the EDTP had equivalent outcomes for individuals with and without elevated depressive symptoms, but we were certainly pleased to find that this protocol may address this important issue."

The study, titled "An Open Trial Investigation of a Transdiagnostic Group Treatment for Children With Anxiety and Depressive Symptoms," is published online ahead of print in the journal Behavior Therapy.

The next step is for the team to conduct a randomized controlled trial comparing the EDTP to another group treatment protocol for anxiety disorder.

More younger people getting colorectal cancer | Cancer Kick

Carol Carr showed all the signs of colorectal cancer seven years ago, but doctors thought the 44-year-old Glen Burnie woman was too young to have the disease and never tested her for it.

Instead, they said her diarrhea, vomiting, cramping, iron deficiency and extreme fatigue were more likely caused by the flu, anxiety and even a brain disorder.

Treatments for those illnesses failed and Carr got so sick she had to stop working. When she finally saw a specialist who ordered a colonoscopy she was suffering from Stage II colorectal cancer. The test found a mass that blocked most of her colon and had grown through her intestinal wall.

Misdiagnoses like Carr?s are becoming more common as a disease historically associated with people older than 50 is increasingly inflicting a younger population.

While overall rates of colorectal cancer have been dropping since the 1980s, cases in people under age 50 have been slowly, but steadily rising, research has found. The biggest increases come in people in their 40s.

Overall rates have been declining by about 3 percent per year in men and by 2.3 percent per year in women, according to the American Cancer Society. But colorectal cancer rates in people age 18 to 49 increased 2.1 percent between 1998 and 2007.

While younger patients still make up a sliver of people who get the cancer, researchers and scientists are paying more attention before the problem worsens. It was a topic of discussion at a conference last week for the Colon Cancer Alliance in Baltimore.

Dr. Y. Nancy You, a surgical oncologist from Texas who spoke at the conference, said that most research on colorectal cancer skews toward older people. More wide-scale research on younger people needs to be done to better understand the new patterns of the disease, she said.

?It?s hard to know whether the current research is really applicable to the younger population,? she said.

Nobody really knows why the cancer is increasing in younger people.

Doctors believe lifestyle, including bad eating habits, lack of exercise and obesity, is part of the problem. Some of the answer probably also lies in genetics and environmental factors, doctors said.

Better screening and testing have helped over time to curb the disease, which is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer. Doctors are able to detect and remove polyps, sack-like growths on the colon wall, before they manifest into cancer.

But guidelines generally call for screening people older than 50 and suggest younger people get tested only if they are showing signs of cancer and have a family history.

Even when younger patients have signs such as anemia and digestive complaints, doctors are more likely to attribute that to a medical problem other than cancer. Patients themselves may also wait to see a doctor because they might not connect the symptoms to cancer.

?I flip-flopped from doctor to doctor and tried treatment after treatment that would work for six months and then stop,? said Eden Stotsky-Himelfarb, a nurse with the gastrointestinal surgical group at Johns Hopkins. She was diagnosed with stage 3 rectal cancer at age 26, but believes she was misdiagnosed for eight years. Stotsky-Himelfarb said she had a family history of cancer, including a grandfather who had colon cancer, that should have alerted doctors.

Carr is now 51 and cancer-free, but remembers the frustration of being misdiagnosed. The sales engineer had three-fourths of her colon removed. Like many colorectal cancer survivors, she still deals with bowel problems. She said doctors need to be more aware of the symptoms of the disease and patients should be more proactive as well.

?If patients are showing symptoms, they need to be tested no matter their age,? she said.

When they are finally diagnosed, the cancer in younger patients has usually progressed to a more advanced stage, making it more complicated and costly to treat, doctors said.

Dr. Laura Porter was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer at age 43 after experiencing several misdiagnoses. Training to become a doctor at the time, she was forced to drop out of her pediatric residency program after becoming sick. She would suffer two additional reoccurrences after her initial treatment.

In a Volatile Market, What Investment Strategy is Best for You? | Epou

Posted by Eta Phi Sports on Jul 28, 2012 in investing | 0 comments

A volatile market may be just what the doctor ordered?at least for those investors who feel holding an investment for 30 days is as likely as holding an investment for eternity. Although most of the day trading operations that popped up in cities and towns across the country in the 90s no longer exist, I can assure you that the idea of trading for a quick profit exists now more than ever. The amateurs that frequented such places placed usually their trades using an excessive amount of margin, and had success riding an incredible bull market. those investors are now likely extinct. What remains is a the more sophisticated investor sitting at home with access to more research than ever, trading on his laptop or now even his smart phone, still looking to make a quick profit.

Professional traders have been around for many years. they are now responsible for the highest percentage of daily trading volume and are getting more attention than ever. What has changed with these professional traders is that they have become more active, manage a lot more money, are willing to trade on smaller percentage changes, and hold positions for a shorter amount of time.

It may be hard to believe, but the average holding period for stocks on the new York Stock Exchange (NYSE) is down to under a minute. Some estimates have the average holding period down to between 11 to 22 seconds. it has gotten to the point that some of the largest trading operations located on the West Coast are picking up real estate on the East Coast just to shave fractions of a second off their execution times.

For those of us who manage portfolios for ourselves as well as our clients, and who still value the benefits of fundamental analysis and implementing an investment strategy that is understandable, reasonable and, hopefully, repeatable, the thought of holding a position for a few seconds doesn?t cross our minds. we are much more interested in running a tax-efficient portfolio that is designed to pursue the clients? stated goals and objectives.

When considering a more fundamental or disciplined approach to investing, many turn to what is commonly known as growth investing or value investing. Growth investors are those that invest in companies that have consistently beat their earnings estimates in previous quarters. The expectation is that those companies will continue to outperform in the future. this strategy, pioneered by Thomas Rowe, Jr., of T. Rowe Price, typically works well as long as the company continues to meet or exceed expectations. If they don?t, share prices tend to fall rapidly and, in many cases, by a large percentage. why does it drop by such a large percentage? Possibly because all of the growth investors want out at the same time and the value investors are looking more at the fundamentals, and still feel the shares are overpriced.

Value investors, on the other hand, are more interested in the fundamentals of companies. they are more likely to identify companies that have a low price-to-book ratio, little if any debt, a low price-to-earnings ratio, and possibly high dividend yields. Purchasing companies that are currently under public scrutiny and are out of favor but have good fundamentals is typical for a value investor. Value investing dates back to 1928, when Ben Graham and David Dodd began teaching the strategy at the Columbia Business School. One of the best-known investors that pays attention to attributes of value investing is Warren Buffett, Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway. Primary risks for value investors are that the companies they invest in don?t improve and the fundamentals continue to get worse. For example, a company with a price-to-earnings ratio of 5-to-1 can quickly go from infinity to one if the company begins to lose money. That too can cause a serious percentage decrease in the value of the shares.

If you feel that both of these strategies have merit but are unsure of which would be best for you, than why not consider ?Growth at a Reasonable Price,? commonly referred to as GARP, a strategy popular with legendary investors like Fidelity?s Peter Lynch. GARP investors look for companies that have attributes of both growth and value investing. they look for companies that are somewhat undervalued but also have solid sustainable growth potential. Simply put, earnings growth matters, but so does valuation. The idea is to purchase companies that have characteristics of both growth and value. it is not to develop a portfolio of some companies that only have value characteristics and some companies that only have growth characteristics. Some might say this is the best of both worlds. it allows the portfolio opportunity to perform well as earnings continue to improve and also attempts to help protect on the downside in the event the company?s earnings are a disappointment.

Don?t be overly confident in any strategy you choose. There is no magic strategy that works every time and in every economic environment. having a well thought out financial plan that keeps you from making emotional decisions when your strategy happens to be out of favor trumps any investment strategy. If you are still interested and believe you can make your fortune by making millions of trades in a single day, you are welcome to give it a try ? but your competition has a lot of computing power and experience that you don?t. I think you are better off going to a casino. Casinos have people and processes in place to not let their customers get too far over their heads, and you get free drinks.

McKesson to pay $151M to settle drug-pricing suit

(AP) ? McKesson Corp. will pay $151 million to 29 states and the District of Columbia to settle a lawsuit alleging the company inflated prices of hundreds of prescription drugs, causing state Medicaid programs to overpay millions of dollars in reimbursements, officials said Friday.

The agreement with San Francisco-based McKesson, one of the country's largest drug wholesalers, settles allegations the company deliberately inflated drug prices by as much as 25 percent from 2001 to 2009.

An investigation by state and federal agencies found that McKesson overbilled for more than 1,400 brand-name drugs from 2001 to 2009. They include commonly prescribed medications such as Adderall, Allegra, Ambien, Celexa, Lipitor, Neurontin, Prevacid, Prozac and Ritalin, officials said.

California will receive about $24 million of the settlement, said state Attorney General Kamala Harris. That money will go to the state Medicaid program, not recipients.

"In these difficult budget times, it is crucial that California's scarce public resources support the urgent needs of our state," Harris said in a statement. "We cannot allow dollars meant for patients to be diverted to inflate corporate profits."

McKesson representative Kris Fortner said the claims against the company are without merit, but "given the inherent uncertainty of litigation, we determined that this settlement was in the best interest of our employees, customers, suppliers and shareholders."

"We did not manipulate drug prices and did not violate any laws," Fortner said.

The settlement stems from a 2005 whistleblower lawsuit that was filed under federal and states' false claims statutes. It alleged that McKesson inflated average wholesale prices reported to First Data Bank, which many state Medicaid programs use to set payment rates for pharmaceutical reimbursement.

The federal government settled its portion of the lawsuit in April for more than $187 million.

New York will receive the largest share of the states' settlement, $36 million, according to officials with state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman's office.

"Pharmaceutical distribution companies are not above the law. This settlement holds McKesson accountable for attempting to make millions of dollars in illegal profits," Schneiderman said.

Besides California and New York, states covered in the settlement include Arkansas, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Washington, West Virginia and Wyoming. The District of Columbia also was covered.

Real Estate Firms Prepare To Cater To The Green Way Of Life With ...

Building homes created for energy-efficiency as well as sustainability is now a pervading trend amongst real estate corporations as more and more property buyers are identifying the truly amazing benefits of an environmentally friendly way of life. With the most recent architectural technology and also engineering, houses aren?t just made to impress style-wise, but they are also built to offer homeowners with a chance to save money on energy expenses and more importantly to withstand intense weather as well as particular ecological elements.

But what defines a green home, exactly? In respect to experts on earth-friendly architecture, the meaning is usually based on the relative concept that folks have of a green lifestyle. More often than not, folks assume that it?s exactly about being able to drastically spend less on energy and employ sustainable constructing materials, but, for real estate organizations, it?s about having the capacity to incorporate both needs and also designing structures smartly in a manner that beauty and comfort are not jeopardized. The LEED system has been a key component for these companies, and so home designs effectively push the actual objective of a pleasantly green way of life.

The LEED system rates a green home on some essential factors. Energy efficiency is most likely the primary factor and the green options to the standard sources really should perform considerably better. Real estate corporations are already integrating solar panels and also wind turbines into their designs to substantially reduce living expenses in an environmentally-sound way.

The second is water efficiency; contractors are creating a system as a way to conserve water for each house with better pipelines and also reduced yet sufficient water drainage to avoid waste.

The third aspect is interior environmental quality; essentially what this generates is much better air circulation within the building to minimize producing of toxic elements (such as moulds) that multiply in a area with bad venting.

Fourth is place selection; this is certainly essential because a community which shares the same eco-friendly values may make sticking to the lifestyle far more easy. Real estate corporations are really picky with regards to the sites they develop for their goal eco-friendly market as they do not wish to entice a poor lot which could bargain the value of the spot. Normally for green communities there is a code of ethics which members must adhere to for both maintenance as well as durability.

Fifth is the choice of materials; builders promote the lifestyle by making use of a variety of recycled, top-grade and environmentally-responsible products for home building.

Last, but surely not the least, is advancement; the latest technology and designs often ensure much better energy, performance and design-wise, and constructors are quick to choose them as much as entice buyers looking for a place that will enable them to conserve and be -environmentally- less guilty.

Retail businesses bring vitality to Main Streets | Women, Work and ...

Retailing it on Main Street: Where community and business goals meet
By Eloise Vitelli , Special to the BDN
When Bath won national recognition as one of five Great American Main Streets this spring, it validated the efforts of countless community volunteers, business leaders and shop owners across Maine engaged in revitalizing and investing in their own down towns. A lot of hard work and planning over many years went into making Bath a ?great place to live, work, and play;? other communities ? there are now 10 official members of the Main Street program ? are following suit, building on their unique assets, incorporating arts and culture and supporting and attracting diverse businesses to their downtown areas. The Main Street program is supported by the Maine Development Foundation?s Maine Downtown Center.
For a retail business, locating in one of these towns is as much a commitment to community as it is a business investment. According to Jennifer Geiger, head of Bath?s Main Street association, meeting the needs of local customers is at the heart of a successful downtown revitalization effort. Business community members then come together around a shared vision, work to identify and promote their unique features and diversify the mix of businesses in the local economy. By patronizing these downtown businesses, local residents help support an environment and activities that enhance community life.
The Courtyard Cafe, a full-service restaurant in downtown Houlton, has been one of the anchors in that town?s revitalization for the last 14 years. Joyce Transue, owner and chef, takes great pride in the success of her restaurant and feels she has ?created a pleasant, comfortable atmosphere that helps draw people to town.? Her function room provides space for locals to meet, including groups involved in Houlton?s community development. The building, which she owns, houses two other businesses, a yarn shop and a computer repair business, drawing other customers to Houlton?s historic downtown. A second restaurant opened across the street from the Cafe.
?The competition is good,? said Joyce. ?It gives people coming to town more options, so more come.?
Houlton became a Maine Downtown Network community in 2011, a first step toward becoming a Main Street community.
The Monkitree Gallery, a fine art and crafts gallery in Gardiner, offers another example of how business development and community development come together. In looking around for a place to land, having had enough of life in the big metropolis, Clare Marron and her partner were drawn to Gardiner precisely because it was a community with a vision and a plan. ?We wanted to get in on what was about to happen,? was Clare?s way of putting it. They found a lot of information about the community readily available and they liked the beautiful old buildings ? including the one they ended up buying and renovating. The fact that community members had organized to promote their town made it easier for Clare to see how her business idea could fit; it wasn?t long before she was asked to join the board of Gardiner Main Street.
After two years in operation, Clare says she feels connected to her new community ? the local artists her gallery promotes, other Main Street shop owners, and local service providers.
?As a property owner with ongoing renovations, we hire local contractors of all sorts,? she said. ?It is important to remember that trades people are part of our community and contribute to our success.?
In Portland, an active Buy Local movement adds to the sense of community fostered by the Portland Downtown District. When Melissa Rivera was working on her business plan, she knew she wanted to support local craft producers. Today all of the fine crafts sold at lalo Boutique are made in Maine, many one of a kind. Her location, in the State Theater building in what is known as the Upper Arts District, allows her to reach the local market and benefit from the foot traffic associated with other nearby eateries, art studios and service businesses.
?In addition,? she noted, ?95 percent of our vendors live right here in Portland. Shopping at lalo takes ?buy local? to a whole new level. Our credit card processor, our shopping bag supplier, all our print needs, etc., is sourced right in Portland.?
While running her business, Melissa also serves the community as a member of the Downtown District and is on the board of the Buy Local campaign. ?It?s a win-win for all parties involved; it keeps us in the loop about all things local, for instance, we know when a cruise ship is in town.?
It takes a community to raise a community may seem redundant, but among retailers like these three, being involved in helping to create their communities makes good business sense.
?I?d like to see all the shops full,? said Joyce in Houlton. In Gardiner, Clare wants ?all of us to succeed ? and a few more.?
For new downtown retailers, Melissa offers this advice: ?Don?t be afraid to be different, be passionate about what you are doing ? and network, network, network.?

Galliani opens door for Kaka to return to AC Milan

Associated Press Sports

updated 9:09 a.m. ET July 25, 2012

MILAN (AP) -AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani has opened the door to a return for Rossoneri icon Kaka from Real Madrid.

Kaka's days at Madrid appear to be numbered, and the Brazil star was left behind for Tuesday's friendly win against Real Oviedo.

Galliani has reportedly held informal talks with Kaka's agent and, when asked about a possible return, says "certain loves never die, they just go round on a long journey and come back again."

Kaka is still idolized by Milan fans after a golden six-year spell during which he helped it to the Serie A title and the Champions League, becoming a global superstar.

He moved to Madrid in 2009 for ?65 million (then $92 million), making him the second most expensive football signing ever after Cristiano Ronaldo.

Vegetarian Parsi Kebabs, the tempting deep-fried delights ? Parsi ...

?Vegetarian Parsi Kebabs ? Parsi Cuisine

Kebabs?are a popular Indian savoury dish. They are known as great cocktail snacks too. The Parsi?s were originally from Persia, which is now Iran. Therefore the Parsi food is a mix of vegetarian Gujarati cuisine and non-vegetarian Iranian cuisine. Parsi dishes are famous for their unique flavour and vegetarian Parsi kebabs ? ?unbelievably addictive? are one of them. These small cutlets are served as both an appetizers and snacks. I also prepare vegetable cutlets at home, which again are liked by all.

Also, I wanted to share with you that I have started contributing on Honest Cooking and this was my contribution.?It really feels great to be a part of an international online culinary magazine like Honest Cooking whose ambition is to truly change the face of online food media. Honest Cooking feature over 200 of the world?s most interesting food & beverage writers, bloggers, photographers ?and chefs, in a magazine that aims to become the leading and most inspiring place for serious culinary debate, salivating recipes, interesting food news and international food-fun. They also want to be smaller, quicker, funnier, smarter and more interesting than all of the current established food websites.

In Kalle Bergman?s words, the editor in chief of Honest Cooking, HC?is all about food and beverages, about living the good life, about the joy of cooking, eating, drinking and experiencing.

Now coming back to the Kebabs, though these absolutely delicious Parsi Kebabs?are unlike the other Kebabs, where you simply boil, mash, mix all ingredients together and make small balls / patties and deep fry them, these need little more time and attention but at the end, you will certainly not regret the effort.

So why wait? Make these at home and enjoy it with your loved ones. Don?t forget to sip a cup of hot tea or coffee while having these tempting deep-fried delights.

Vegetarian Parsi Kebabs ? Parsi Cuisine

Vegetarian Parsi Kebabs ? Parsi Cuisine

Ingredients

  • Boiled Potatoes ? 5 medium size
  • Bread slices ? 3
  • Green Chillies ? 1 -2
  • Salt to taste
  • Dry Mango Powder ? ? teaspoon
  • Red Chilli Powder ? ? teaspoon
  • Indian Garam Masala ? ? teaspoon
  • Dry Fenugreek leaves ? 1 tablespoon
  • Oil for frying the Kebabs
  • For stuffing in the Kebabs ?
  • Boiled Chana Dal (Bengal Gram) ? ? cup
  • Desiccated Coconut ? 2 tablespoons
  • Cashews chopped ? 4 ? 5
  • Raisins ? 7-8
  • For coating the Kebabs ?
  • Semolina ? 2 tablespoons

Instructions

  1. Take a bowl, mash boiled potatoes in it with the help of a potato masher or spatula.
  2. Add in all the dry spices and mix nicely to form a smooth mixture. Add in the dry fenugreek leaves.
  3. In a bowl of water, dip bread slices one by one, squeeze them with both the palms and drain the water from it and mix it into the mashed potatoes mixture. These act as a binder.
  4. Potato mixture is ready and now we need to prepare the stuffing for the Kebabs.
  5. For the stuffing in the Kebabs ?
  6. Mix nicely the boiled/mashed Chana Dal, desiccated coconut and the chopped cashews and raisins.
  7. Make small balls from this mixture (size of a small lemon or a boiled egg yolk). These balls we will fill in the potato mixture.
  8. To make the Kebabs, take a little bigger size potato mixture ball in your palms and flatten it and fill it with the chana dal small balls and close the kebabs covering the chana dal yellow ball,to form an oval shape. Press gently with your palms.
  9. Roll these oval shaped Kebabs in the semolina flour before frying.
  10. Heat vegetable oil in a heavy-bottomed skillet and deep fry these kebabs, till golden brown on both the sides turning them gently.Fry them on medium to high flame.
  11. Serve hot with mint chutney.

Notes

You can bake them, shallow or deep fry them and enjoy these Kebabs as an appetizer with some mint chutney; they taste really good with mint chutney or you can even stuff these in sandwich/pita bread with some sliced vegetables and sauce of your choice. You can replace bread slices with some corn flour as a binder. Boil the chana dal and remove the water fully before using it for the stuffing. In place of dry fenugreek leaves you can also use fresh coriander leaves. Sprinkle some chaat masala on the Kebabs for some extra tangy flavour.

A Look At Dropshipping As A Viable Home Business - madeinjapan.us

Business

If you?d like to build a business or earn money from home without spending a large amount of money upfront, then drop shipping may be something you?d enjoy. In this business model you essentially become the middle person between a wholesale dropshipper and the customer and you make money from the difference of the wholesale and retail price. This is dissimilar to the traditional retail method in that you will just get the payment from the customer and send the order to the wholesaler who then ships the purchased products directly to the customer.

You will still handle the promoting and advertising of the product, but you do not have to order the goods in bulk, and that means you do not need to raise a considerable amount of money for capital and you also avoid expenditures related to storage. With inventory and shipping handled by the wholesale dropship company, you can focus on selling.Having a drop ship business continues to grow in popularity as access to the Internet has become widely available as online auction and ecommerce websites have become very common. Right now, you can already find and do business with dropship wholesalers from China as easily as you can with those in the United States and other parts of Europe.

The products that these dropship wholesalers from China sell range from electronic devices, car accessories, and clothing and fashion accessories.Even though this business model can generate substantial income, the span of time it will take to become successful could differ among sellers. Your ability to succeed in this business is dependent on several factors but the most crucial of these are the quality and price of the products you offer for sale, and how effective your marketing efforts are. Creating a personal website or a seller account on online auction platforms enables you to sell your goods to more people.

Selecting the right dropship wholesaler is also a factor that is important to your success in this business. While there are a good number of reputable dropshippers, there are also a number of individuals and companies which are attempting to take advantage of retailers who lack experience or just plain na?ve. Case in point, some folks may try to sell you a list of wholesalers which are not reputable to start with. Before investing in any dropship company, you should do your homework first.

Check the prices for which these dropship companies are selling their products. To do this, you can run a query using a search engine to determine the average retail price of an item you want to sell and then compare it to the price determined by the drop shipping company. The drop shipper?s price should be less than the resale price. You should also test the time it will take for the wholesaler to ship items. New International Trade Crossing will attract new business to Port of ...

Canadian Sailings

By Julia Fields

The new international bridge linking Windsor and Detroit is expected to produce game-changing future business opportunities for Port of Windsor, which will play a critical role in its construction.

The Canadian-funded bridge, which was announced by Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Michigan Governor Rick Snyder in June, and its connecting road interchanges and buildings will not only require millions of tons of construction materials that can be delivered by ship but economists believe it will help put the region on the map for new manufacturing and logistics investment.

David Cree, President and CEO of Windsor Port Authority, said:? ?We?re very pleased that the federal government and the State of Michigan have reached an agreement on how to proceed with a new bridge.? We think it will bring terrific benefits to the City of Windsor and the port.?

Work has already begun on the Windsor Essex Parkway that will connect Highway 401 to the new bridge, and that infrastructure alone will require as much as 2.5 million tons of stone, the vast majority of which will arrive by ship through the port of Windsor.

Port of Windsor is home to major construction-related companies such as CBM-St. Mary?s Cement, Miller Paving, Essroc Italcementi, Lafarge Canada Inc, Southwestern Sales Corp Ltd and Coco Aggregates.

A similar road connection will be required on the U.S. side of the new bridge, along with a new 100-acre staging area for trucks, customs buildings and toll booths on the Canadian side. Although estimates have not yet been calculated on the total tonnage of steel, cement and stone required for the four-year bridge construction project, Cree expects that it will also provide a big short-term boost to shipping through the port.

More significantly, however, will be the long-term future business opportunities that will come from Windsor having a more efficient cross-border route that serves one of the most populous regions of North America. The Windsor-Detroit region, due to its location West of Chicago and East of Toronto, is within close proximity to a significant portion of the North American population. The existing Ambassador Bridge is already the busiest international border crossing between Canada and the U.S in terms of trade volume.

Major corporations such as Chrysler Group and Ford Motor Company have said that having an additional second bridge to cut down on congestion and improve the efficiency of their supply chain will be crucial to their future international competitiveness and new investment in the region.

Bill Anderson, Director of the Cross-Border Transportation Studies Institute at the University of Windsor, said: ?The idea of building this crossing is to improve the economy by making it more productive and that in itself will create more investment and job opportunities.? An efficient border crossing will make this region more attractive to manufacturing investment and also those companies involved in logistics and warehousing.?

Cree believes that the port will be an ideal location for companies that are looking for quick access to the bridge along with water transportation to bring in materials. ?The Port has a 30-acre parcel of land which is adjacent to the new Canadian truck plaza.? Now that the bridge announcement has been made, we believe our property will be highly desirable for a manufacturing or logistics operation. ?

Windsor Port Authority is also working with CP and Borealis Infrastructure to build a proposed double-stacked rail tunnel between Windsor and Detroit. The $400-million project is currently seeking financing from government sources. Known as the Continental Rail Gateway, the new rail tunnel would replace the existing tube constructed in 1909. Despite its age, the current Windsor-Detroit rail tunnel handles 400,000 railcars and $22 billion in trade each year. But it is too small to handle the growing trend toward larger, double-stack rail cars ? many coming from the port of Montreal.

Cree says that the new international bridge crossing, together with the proposed rail tunnel and the port, would provide super-efficient multimodal access between Canada and the U.S. that would be unrivaled in this part of North America.

?The Windsor-Detroit region has the potential to become a multimodal transportation hub for Continental North America ? a region that is both a manufacturing engine and a huge consumer marketplace for Canadian, American and international businesses.? Port of Windsor will play a crucial role in that future supply chain.?

Time Speeds By | Musings from Me on Kids, Preteens, and Teens

So let?s see. The summer is over half way over. I?m sure this is not the first time and it certainly won?t be the last time I?ll exclaim ?Wow, where did the summer go??

Summer, like every other season, flies by. Did life move slower when I was working and had no children? Did I putter about during the baby and toddler days? Did the days seem endless during the years when I had little kids? Our calendar was certainly not so full. I could manage the day-to-day events for my baby and myself quite easily. I never felt that life was speeding by. On the contrary, I often felt that the days were endless. Would my husband ever get home?I?d ponder as I stared at the unmoving hands of the clock.

What I wonder give for time to standstill. My oldest will be college hunting this coming school year. Her younger sister is about to start high school. Even the baby?my youngest?is heading in to 4th grade. Almost done with elementary school. Hard to believe. There?s only one solution. Time needs to stop rushing by so quickly.

14 killed in Texas pickup truck crash

Texas Department of Public Safety / AP

A pickup truck crashed into trees in Goliad County, Texas, on Sunday, killing at least 13 people and injuring 10 others, authorities said.

By NBC News staff and wire reports

Updated at 5:31 p.m. ET:?Fourteen people died after a pickup truck loaded with suspected illegal immigrants veered off the highway and crashed into trees in rural South Texas, authorities said.

State troopers and Goliad County sheriff's investigators were investigating Sunday's?crash.?A trooper told KRIS-TV, the NBC affiliate in Corpus Christi, Tex., that it appeared a tire on the truck blew out before the vehicle went off the road and struck two trees.

Authorities said they did not immediately know the names and ages of the victims.

Federal officials believe the 23 people riding in the Ford pickup truck were from Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras.

"We suspect at this time it is going to be illegal immigrants that were in the vehicle, based on the way they were traveling,'' said Lt. Glen Garrett of the Texas Department of Public Safety, Reuters reported.

Vehicle laden with passengers
Gerald Bryant, also of ?the Texas Department of Public Safety, told The Associated Press the dead and wounded were various ages and included at least two young children.

"This is the most people I've seen in any passenger vehicle, and I've been an officer for 38 years," Bryant said.

The pickup was heading north on U.S. 59 around 7 p.m. (9 p.m. ET) Sunday when it traveled off the right side of the highway near the community of Berclair in Goliad County, Bryant said.

The 23 people were loaded inside both the truck's cab and bed.

Six of those who died were still inside the truck when emergency crews arrived to find the mangled vehicle, Bryant said. A man who claimed to have been the driver of the vehicle was ejected but survived, Bryant told the San Antonio Express-News.

He said several of the surviving victims had life-threatening injuries. He did not have their official conditions but described them as "very serious." The injured were taken to various hospitals in San Antonio, Victoria and Corpus Christi. Berclair is about 100 miles southeast of San Antonio.

'Very traumatic'
Border Patrol will assist with the investigation, authorities said.

Crash investigators stayed at the scene into the late hours Sunday to assess the crash, which halted traffic on U.S. 59. "It's been very chaotic here, and it's very traumatic," Bryant told the Express-News earlier from the scene. "It's only first responders out here, and it's very solemn."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
