7 Gift Tips That Aid Charities

Looking to come across the right vacation gift for somebody who has everything? Then think about one particular of these gifts for charity like The Giving Keys, a jewelry for charity.

First, the negative news: Even wealthy men and women are feeling the pinch in this recession ? as well as the poor who are paying for it. Charitable donations are down greater than a third among the wealthiest Americans.

In 2009, almost all ? 98.2 pct ? of US residents having a net worth above $1 million gave to charity. However the volume of their providing dropped substantially from just two years earlier. After adjusting for inflation, average charitable providing by millionaires plummeted 34.9 percent, from $83,000 to $54,000.

?Charitable providing follows the overall economic climate,? says Una Osili, Ph.D., director of study for the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University, which conducted the 2010 Bank of America Merrill Lynch Study of High Net Worth Philanthropy. ?When financial situations improve, charitable giving improves too.?

But average Americans may very well be choosing up the slack. A brand new survey by Christian relief agency Planet Vision claims about half of Americans (51 percent) said they?d be far more likely to offer a charitable gift ? a gift that advantages a charity ? as a vacation present this year.
Gifts that advantage charities

Gifts linked to charities enable you to give a present although helping your (or your recipient?s) preferred worthy bring about. That could mean just generating a cash donation in someone else?s name, but nonprofits are finding inventive to get your money. Listed below are just several examples ?

The Planet Wildlife Fund sells Gift Adoption Cards, which symbolically adopt a polar bear, panda, or less cuddly animal like a chimpanzee. Your gift recipient also gets other goodies, like a plush toy version of that animal and digital versions for their computer?s screensaver and instant messenger icon.

If you want to acquire a tad much less symbolic and a little additional real, you can ?buy? a goat for $50 and an alpaca for $75 from international relief agency Oxfam America. You could even see your gift ?in action.?

The Fidelity Charitable Gift Fund?s Gift4Giving adds its own new twist: You don?t donate for somebody else, you set up a charitable account and they get to choose where the income goes.

If you do not want pals and households obtaining you garments you won?t wear and gadgets you don?t know how to work with, you?ll be able to tell them to donate within your name ? and let them choose from a host of causes. Just like registering to get a wedding, JustGive.org provides the Charity Registry.

What if you?d like to offer an actual gift but have the earnings go to charity as an alternative to a CEO?s bonus? The Charitable Gift Giving Weblog scours the Net seeking for genuine items that donate a minimum of a portion with the cost to an excellent result in. Products consist of a pink breast cancer awareness tie and wines from a winery that donates half its income to charity.

If you are purchasing for a cat or dog lover, shop at the Humane Society?s on the net store, where you can uncover toys and treats for the four-legged friends and pet-related clothing and jewelry for your two-legged close friends.

Quite a few charities have online shops that sell every little thing from calendars to coffee mugs to T-shirts, but some also supply their own exceptional items. For the handyman on your shopping list, home-builder Habitat for Humanity sells a heavy-duty multipurpose utility bag. Individuals for the Ethical Therapy of Animals (PETA) gives a gift box of vegan chocolates ? no dairy. And National Public Radio sells ? radios. Everything from shortwave sets to WiFi radios to field radios. Some are exclusive, which means you cannot find them anywhere else.

?This survey shows that, in the course of uncertain economic instances, Americans continue to prioritize assisting individuals in need,? says Devin Hermanson, who?s national director with the World Vision Gift Catalog, an additional cool thought. ?Americans are determined to reach out with charitable gifts.?

But remember Rule No. 1 with regards to nonprofit donations: Usually examine out a charity before you donate to make sure your cash is helping the bring about and not just going to line the pockets of shady organizations hiding behind a nonprofit banner. Sites like the Far better Organization Bureau, Charity Navigator, and GuideStar Charity Examine might help.

Current stars celebrate Jordan at 50

HOUSTON (AP) ? Michael Jordan turned 50 on Sunday, giving this year's All-Stars a chance to reflect on his illustrious career and how much he still means to the sport.

In a weekend filled with the NBA's greatest players, Jordan was the topic no one could stop talking about. Though he hasn't played since the 2002-03 season, Jordan's influence still permeates the league and its players.

"Every kid that wanted to play basketball, that could play, that couldn't play, you tried to emulate Michael Jordan," Heat star Dwyane Wade said. "That's why there will never be another one of him. He the first of his kind. Everything he did was groundbreaking. He did it with so much flare and so much pizazz that even today people are still trying to be like Mike."

Jordan won six titles and five MVP awards during a career spent mostly with the Bulls that began in 1984.

Jordan was in Houston this weekend, and celebrated his birthday early with a private bash on Friday at the Museum of Fine Arts with guests including LeBron James and Kobe Bryant.

Los Angeles Lakers center Dwight Howard is so impressed with Jordan that he said he's like a real version of Superman.

"Be Like Mike" was more than a marketing campaign. It was a dream for many of today's players.

"He's amazing," Howard said. "He's one of the reasons why we played basketball. He inspired us to do great things. I hear his voice sometimes on commercials, it makes you want to get out there and try to do something."

Jordan retired twice before finally leaving the game for good at age 39. Some people wondered this weekend if he could still play in the NBA, despite reaching the age where he qualifies for an AARP card.

Wade believes this day will be a time for Jordan to reflect on his storied career and appreciate his family and health.

"Kind of look back at all the things he did, so many years ago in the NBA that still lives on today," Wade said. "What he's been able to do to stay this relevant, in this role, the way he has, is phenomenal."

Though he isn't seen often, Jordan is never far from the game. He is close to a group of players through his Jordan Brand apparel and as the owner of the Charlotte Bobcats. He ignited one of the debates of the weekend when he told NBA TV he would chose Bryant over James based on the number of championships each has won.

"If you had to pick between the two, that would be a tough choice, but five beats one every time I look at it, and not that (James) won't get five, he may get more than that, but five is bigger than one," Jordan said in the interview, which airs Monday night.

Carmelo Anthony of the New York Knicks counts Jordan as one of the most influential in his decision to play basketball.

"He changed the game, transcended the game," Anthony said. "He changed the way people coached the game from a mental aspect. From a training aspect, how you approach that, he changed that. So for me as a kid to see that and see somebody go through that and succeed, that was motivation."

Jordan, who retired for the last time with more than 32,000 points, is perhaps known as much by the younger generation of stars for his namesake Nike shoe as for his basketball skills.

"The imprint he's had on the league, he's an immortal," Bryant said. "Everything that he's done from the business aspect to his professionalism to his work ethic to the global appeal of the game has been something that carries on for generations and generations."

Jordan didn't make himself available to the press during All-Star weekend. James said this week that he wasn't too concerned with the TV remarks.

"At the end of the day, rings don't always define someone's career," James said. "If that's the case, then I would sit up here and say that I would take (Bill) Russell over Jordan. I wouldn't. I wouldn't take Russell over Jordan, but Russell has 11 rings and Jordan has six. Or I'd take, I don't know, Robert Horry over Jordan. I wouldn't do that. But it's your own personal opinion."

"Patrick Ewing is one of the greatest of all time," he continued. "Reggie Miller is one of the greatest of all time. Sometimes, it's a situation that you're in, it's the team that you're in. It's about timing as well."

One of the most common sentiments echoed by players this week when talking about Jordan was disbelief that he was turning 50.

"Time actually flies," Bryant said. "Him turning 50, this will be my 17th year, my 15th All-Star Game. Where did the time go?"

Sony Announces Surprise PlayStation Vita Price-Cut in Japan

Sony Announces Surprise PlayStation Vita Price-Cut in Japan

In a surprise press conference overnight, Sony has announced that it is set to slash the price of the PlayStation Vita in Japan. The company confirmed that from 28th February, you?ll be able to pick up either a Wi-Fi or 3G console for around ?19,980 ($215), down from ?24,980 ($269). The platform holder has since confirmed that the cut won?t apply in the West, but there?s always a chance that something might be announced during Wednesday?s upcoming PlayStation Meeting.

For the time being, though, the move is clearly aimed at improving domestic handheld sales. During the surprise event, SCEJ president Hiroshi Kawano also revealed a Phantasy Star Online 2 bundle featuring a console and copy of the game for ?19,980, a red Soul Sacrifice bundle for ?24,980, and a handful of games. Japanese players will also be able to redeem one week of free PlayStation Plus access between 28th February and 18th March.

Amongst the titles on show were Toukiden, a brand new action game from Dynasty Warriors developer Omega Force. Gundam Breaker and Valhalla Knights 3 were also on display, as was God Eater 2. And, finally, the first footage of Final Fantasy X HD was shown, which looked particularly impressive we must admit.

It?s great timing for the price-drop, with the Vita finally gathering a decent collection of heavy hitters in its home region. The console is now just ?1,080 ($11) more expensive than the Nintendo 3DS, which is pretty impressive when you consider the differences in technical prowess. The platform holder needs to continue bringing a steady stream of games, though, if it hopes to compete with its closest competitor?s unstoppable juggernaut.

At least this is a step in the right direction.

Sailors from Kearsarge ARG Prove Their Readiness amid COMPTUEX

Sailors from the Kearsarge Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) and Marines from assigned to the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) completed Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMPTUEX) Feb. 17.

COMPTUEX is designed to prepare and assess the ships in the ARG individually and as a unit prior to deployment.

The Kearsarge ARG is comprised of the amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge (LHD 3), the amphibious transport dock ship USS San Antonio (LPD 17), the amphibious dock landing ship USS Carter Hall (LSD 50), Amphibious Squadron (PHIBRON) 4 and the 26th MEU, embarked with the ARG.

??This COMPTUEX has been very successful,? said Capt. Brad Skillman, commodore of Amphibious Squadron (PHIBRON) 4. ?Everyone in the ARG pulled together and worked hard to make sure that we met all of our goals for the exercise. This shows that we are ready to deploy and will be able to readily handle any challenges that may arise.?

Each ship ran through a series of drills that tested the ARG?s ability to respond to different scenarios such as general quarters, non-combatant evacuation operations, and visit, board, search and seizure operations.

??COMPTUEX validated our ability to carry out any mission,? said Capt. Rick Nielsen, commanding officer of Kearsarge. ?It helped us ensure our readiness before we deploy this spring and it also tested our training and responsiveness. The scenarios pushed our crew to the limit and proved that the extensive training was superior to any training received through the exercise period and well worth the time and effort.?

The three-week exercise also helped to develop cooperation between the different units involved by allowing them to practice responding together to various plausible scenarios.

??The scenarios mirror real-world circumstances that we are possibly going to face in some of the areas in which we are going to be operating,? said Cmdr. Greg Blyden, commanding officer of Carter Hall. ?The brisk pace of operations helped prepare the crew for what could be expected of the ARG and how rapidly a situation could escalate.?

Key components of COMPTUEX are communication and cooperation not only between the ships but also between the Sailors and Marines aboard.

??COMPTUEX prepares the ships for deployment in a safe environment with subject matter experts and mentors available to answer questions,? said Cmdr. Neil A. Koprowski, commanding officer of San Antonio. ?It is also important to garner the blue/green relationships to ensure seamless transitions. There are missions that are inherently Navy, but there are many more that are inherently Marine. You have to find the balance and COMPTUEX allows the ships, the staffs and the MEU that opportunity.?

During COMPTUEX the three ships and the 26th MEU showed that they are ready to deploy and to respond to any number of missions.

??They performed magnificently, and I am honored to stand beside them,? said Col. Matthew G. St. Clair, commanding officer of the 26th MEU. ?I am confident this team is ready for the challenges of the dynamic and uncertain operational environment we will encounter during our deployment.?
